I was given this game for my birthday a few weeks ago. I’d been excited about it since I first heard about it last year and at Christmas I was lucky enough (Thanks Pongo!!) to get a beta for it, and later on of course the PSN Store demo… I have to say both of those put me off buying it. I don’t by many games (except PSN Store Games) as I just usually can’t justify the high launch price and somehow Modnation Racers didn’t feel like value for my £45.
But getting it as a present is a different matter! And while I still enjoy making the carts and the “mods” the racing is hard and doesn’t feel as fun as it could! While the tracks are quite inventive and have character I don’t really think the weapons are as fun as they could be… a lot of effort has gone into the comic style story… so why not the weapons? Instead of rockets, sonic booms and electricity bolts why not… flying killer wellies, cowpat mines and custard slicks?
Difficulty Level: There’s no doubt that I’m only a “casual” game player… U used a 100% game save on LBP until some friends encouraged me to delete it and play through with them. So I usually struggle with most games… but cripes is Modnation hard… okay so far I have got to the end of the “Grim Tour” but it’s been painful and often i’ll have to repeat each track 5 or 6 times… if you have to try it that many times you start asking yourself if it’s still “fun” and often the answer is “no”!
On each race you can complete certain challenges and unlock new parts and stickers for your mod and carts… now it’s making the mods and carts and tracks that attracted me to the game… so this is a big deal for me. But the objectives are so tough that I have unlocked so very few 
Apparently the game makers added a patch to include a new “casual” difficulty level… but even that’s not helping me!
Despite me being not the best game player in the world I honestly think the game is far too hard… If I’d bought it myself I’d certainly be a bit peeved that I’d spent all that money. And I have to admit that on more than one occasion I’ve really questioned whether I’m enjoying the game at all… As so few of my friends play it online I don’t even have that aspect to keep me logging in… So I’m afraid that in a few weeks time Modnation Races may be collect a nice film of dust under our TV cabinet!
